Living for Him

[mine.is.the.night] book review

Mine is the Night by Liz Curtis Higgs is the second book in a saga that tells the tale of two widows in Scotland during the 17th century. Told with grace and a liberal sprinkling of Scottish dialect, the story is engaging, hope-filled and lovely.

The reason I picked up this book is simple: it is a re-telling of the biblical story of Ruth.

It was fun to see how the writer captured the essence of Ruth’s story while writing a new tale of grace and forgiveness. Elisabeth Kerr makes a lovely woman of virtue and her mother-in-law Marjory gives a new perspective to the character of Naomi.

The story is long, about 450 pages, but worth every moment.

If you haven’t read any books by this author— be forewarned: they are hard to get into. She’s an amazing author who does flawless research and weaves a brilliant tale… but you must force yourself to read the first two chapters. After that, you’ll be devouring the story any chance you get.

Here Burns My Candle is the first book in this saga.

For more by this author read The Lowlands of Scotland Series. These are the re-telling of Leah, Rachel and Jacob. Grace in Thine Eyes, the last of the series is the story of Leah and Jacob’s daughter Dinah.

WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group provided this book to me for free in exchange for this honest review as part of their Blogging for Books program.
