Oh My Soul
Have you ever read a book and thought, “I’m pretty sure if I knew this writer in person we’d be close friends?”
Yeah, that’s how I felt when I first picked up the book, Upside Down by Shannon Guerra.
Her writing was so real, so honest, so hilariously funny…I knew if we ever met the only thing that could stand between us being the best of friends might be her obsession with cats vs. my barely-there tolerance of them.
So when Shannon said she was coming out with a new book—a book on prayer—I couldn’t reply fast enough to ask if I could get my hands on a copy early.
She sent me an advance reader’s copy of Oh My Soul: Encountering God in Honest, Unconventional (and sometimes messy) Prayer and I spent the next three days reading it whenever I could escape for a few minutes.
I can’t tell you how many times I laughed out loud, or how many times the words caught my throat tight and breathed life into some long-shriveled up places of my heart.
See, we’ve been fighting in prayer for breakthrough with our son—healing from trauma, healing from fear—and some days I just get tired. My hope withers right up inside me.
And God knew I needed this book to wake myself up with truth.
Some things you just can’t rush, like listening to God, raising children, and healing from trauma. And don’t forget teaching arithmetic, which some of us might consider a combination of all three. –Oh My Soul, Shannon Guerra
I can tell you one thing for certain: only read this book if you are prepared to be inspired, admonished, and encouraged.
Only read this book if you are ready to be reminded of how God works.
Oh My Soul is beautifully prophetic, my friends. It reminds us that God’s voice is speaking, right now, right here, in the middle of the mundane.
He is so close. Working and fighting for His children, with rivers of grace at our disposal.
Grace never adds up correctly. Grace multiplies. –Oh My Soul, Shannon Guerra
It’s easy, when life gets hard, to let the enemy dictate how wide and how deep our lives go. Everything gets shallow, because you’re just worrying about breathing. Everything gets narrow, because you can’t see past the next step.
And that’s okay for a little while. God gets it.
But He also knows there is more for you.
This habit of relentless prayer broadens the limits we set for ourselves…before you know it, your comfort zone has grown deep and wide and you’re still pushing the edges of it outward.- Oh My Soul, Shannon Guerra
In the midst of trauma, God calls us deeper. In the midst of tragedy, God calls us wider. In the midst of the mundane—God says,
Walk where I tell you and then watch Me hold the waters back. –Oh My Soul, Shannon Guerra
I don’t know where you are in your life, but I know that this book will bless you and call you deeper.
I know that I’m buying myself a print copy to put on my shelf, to pick up when I have a moment, to use as a reminder that in the messy, in the crazy, in the quiet—God is moving.
As our faith becomes more radical, our spirit grows more resolved, rested, peaceful. We believe Him wildly and are moved with speed by the current of His grace, while our spirit is becalmed even in the midst of the storm. Our spirit only finds rest when our faith is on the move. –Oh My Soul, Shannon Guerra
There are books that I enjoy, books that encourage me, books that make me laugh, and books that spur me forward in my walk with God—and this book? It does all of these things. Which is a rare find indeed.
